CHOQUEQUIRAO TREK 4 DAYS / 3 NIGHTS
This lost city fascinated 19th century explorers and Hiram Bingham visited it two years before he discovered Machu Picchu. Difficult to reach, the ruins are rarely visited by travellers.
The southern approach to Choquequirao from Cachora requires a steep descent from almost 3200 metres down to the Apurimac river at 1200 metres, followed by an even steeper ascent up to the ruins. The site is perched a magnificent 1150 metres above the Apurimac, surrounded by densely-forested mountain slopes in the shadow of the huge, snowcapped Salkantay massif. In recent years, the ruins have been partially-cleared by Peruvian archaeologists, and can be easily explored by those intrepid enough to undertake the demanding trek required to get there.
DAY 1: CUSCO - CACHORA :
We will leave Cusco (3350m/10991f) approximately at 5:30 am. First, we will head for the village Choquequirao_cachorara (2850m/9350f) to meet our horsemen and the mules that will carry all the camping equipment during the expedition. Thereafter, we will continue our journey towards the pass of Capuliyoc (2800m/9186f). The trek offers a beautiful view of the mythical mountain Padreyoc, of the deep canyon and of the river Apurímac, meaning “speaking river”. Thereupon, we will descend towards the canyon's interior named Chiquisca (1950m), where we will spend the night.
DAY 2: CHIQUISCA TO CHOQUEQUIRAO :
After breakfast, we will descend to La Playa Rosalina (1550m). From there, we will continue heading for Marampata (2850m/9350f), where we will have a beautiful view of the archaeological complex of Choquequirao (3033m). Our camping site is located 25 minutes from the settlement.
DAY 3: CHOQUEQUIRAO TO CHIQUISCA :
Today we bid farewell to Choquequirao and begin our descent to the Apurimac river, crossing the bridge again and beginning the ascent to Cachora before camping for the night above the river in a small glade of trees.
DAY 4: CHIQUISCA - CACHORA RETURN TO CUSCO :
Camino Inca An early start today will help us to avoid the worst of the heat in the canyon and guarantee us some magnificent views of the Apurimac and the surrounding peaks. We will arrive in Cachora around lunchtime, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Cusco. Transfer to hotel.
